Rotten Reporting: Burying the Lead in a “Illegal Tattooing” Story

When Fox Carolina noted the arrest of 28-year-old degenerate Eric Brown on a variety of charges they ran the headline Fountain Inn Man Charged with Illegal Tattooing. Underneath the headline they note that he was “also” charged with criminal sexual conduct as if the illegal tattooing was the bigger crime. Reading the article I suspect I see why the reporter lead with the relatively minor crime of illegal tattooing:
Laurens County investigators said they have issued warrants against Brown for 10 counts of illegal tattooing, six counts of tattooing under 21, three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor second degree and two counts of lewd acts on a minor.
The reporter simply took the crime that happened the most to be the most serious, and thus the lead. But if a man was arrested for two murders and five assaults would the story be about the assaults? The tattooing in this story seems to be incidental to Brown preying on children. I would bet that Brown used tattooing as an “in” with children he wanted to have sex with.
Thus the real story here is that Brown is a filthy pervert, not a renegade tattooist.
Then at the end we see another fact about this case that would make a better lead:
During their search, investigators said they discovered a meth lab and arrested three people on drug charges: James Peter Richey, Furman William Vaughn and Shanon Gail Thompson.
A child molester was part of a meth ring and the lead is that he gave illegal tattoos? Journalism is well and truly dead.
Suspected Character Actor Busted Cooking Meth in Mauldin
The meth cooker’s name is Yancey Bowen Lacroix, which is a step above being named Colonial Stonewall Shrimpngrits I guess. But other than riverboat gambler or hoodoo rootworker I’m not sure how many career paths are open to a Yancey Bowen Lacriox. It’s like naming your daughter Amber which pretty much forces her to dance topless at some point.
I guess his parents didn’t want to be obvious and name him something like “Gabby Hayes” or “Rip Torn” which would have limited him in his choice in life. Anyway, as you might expect the Lacroix family name has taken another hit recently, thanks to the Mauldin Lacroixs:
MAULDIN, S.C. — Mauldin police said officers shut down a methamphetamine lab on Thursday.
Police said the lab was found during an investigation at 109 Gail Drive.
Firefighters and narcotics agents were called in to process the materials found at the working lab, police said.
Yancey Bowen Lacroix, 31, was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, illegal disposal of hazardous waste and distribution of methamphetamine. Police said he will likely face other charges later.
Mauldin is lousy with meth labs these days. I should have moved to Traveler’s Rest. Here’s a tip for parents out there – if you pick a name for your kid that sounds like he’s a character in a Southern Gothic horror movie he’s going to end up in the papers.
“Great Mother” Who Left Baby in Car on Drug Run Heading Off to Rehab
I called this one. Simpsonville resident Jessica Perry – who was arrested after leaving her baby alone in an unlocked car by I-85 – has told a judge she’s going to rehab in a bid to stay out of prison. This is all but an admission that these trips into North Carolina were drug runs. Drug runs with her baby in tow. Outrageous!
Despite that, here is what Linda Simpson, Perry’s mother, had to say about her daughter:
Linda Simpson, Perry’s mother, told NewsChannel 36 her daughter had never done anything like this before. She described her daughter as “a great mother.”
Really? She was caught twice driving under the influence in one week, had illegal prescription drugs on her and left her baby in a car alone and she’s a great mother? I would hate to see what Linda Simpson thinks is the bare minimum of mothering.
Fox Carolina has video of Perry in court and she’s a remarkably rubenesque woman for a drug addict, which I hope means that her addiction is new enough that it hasn’t destroyed her health. That video interviews a cop who was on scene who said aside from the drugs Hopefully she can get sober but with a mother who can look someone in the face and call Perry a good mother I’m not sure how good a support system she has.
Hipster Douchebag Caught Growing ‘Shrooms in Simpsonville

Look at this fucking mushroom grower:
SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. — At about 5:30 p.m. Friday, deputies with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office responded to 32 Winding Creek Way in Simpsonville after receiving information about suspicious activity at the residence.
Once on scene, deputies made contact with 40-year-old Arnold Paul Strollo, who they subsequently learned had several outstanding warrants through the sheriff’s office. He was taken into custody without incident.
While at the residence, deputies observed several containers that contained mushrooms in different stages of development.
Investigators from the sheriff’s office determined that the mushrooms were illegal psychedelic mushrooms and sent for a clean-up crew from the DEA dispose of the items.
According to investigators, Strollo faces charges of manufacturing psychedelic mushrooms, simple possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Strollo was transported to the Greenville County Detention Center where he awaits a bond hearing.
With facial hair like that what did people think he was going to be doing with his life. You can find more pictures of hipster douchebags here.
Victimless Crime File: Pill Popper Leaves Baby Alone in Car on I-85
29-year-old Jessica Perry of Simpsonville was arrested today when a 13-month old baby was found alone in her unheated car on I-85 near Highway 321. The car was also unlocked, I assume to make it easier for hungry cannibals to get to the free meal.
When police found Jessica, she said they had run out of gas. Of course, no gas station had seen her looking for gas:
GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) – A South Carolina woman was taken to jail after a baby was found alone in a car parked along I-85 near Highway 321.
The young girl was found by herself in an unlocked vehicle with no heat around 1:15 Sunday morning.
The investigating officer said the child was placed in a police cruiser to warm her up. She was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital for observation, and is expected to be ok.
The officer said that the woman who is believed to be the mother of the child told police that she had run out of gas and left the baby in the car.
29 year old Jessica Perry of Simpsonville, South Carolina has been charged with driving while impaired and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, among other charges.
She also was arrested for DUI a week ago in Mecklenberg County from a week ago. According to this video report it is unknown if the baby is even hers:
Hmmm. What would a woman from Simpsonville be doing traveling to North Carolina once a week even though her license was suspended? Could it have anything to do with the prescription pills she was caught with? Truly a mystery.
