Greenville Based Waste Oil Rustlers Arrested in North Carolina

Oil Rustlin' Outlaws!

I’ve heard of thieves targeting waste oils from restaurants due to the boom in bio-diesel, but until now I was unaware of the market for waste motor oil. The recycling centers you take your old motor oil to store it and sell it later to people who in turn sell it to companies that refine the waste product and turn it into boat fuel, lubricants and fuel for furnaces and boilers. The temptation to cut down on overhead by stealing the oil from the recycling sites rather than buying it overwhelmed  two local oilmen and now those outlaws are cooling their heels in a North Carolina jail:

From WXii12:

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Two South Carolina men have been charged with stealing motor oil from businesses in Alamance County.

Burlington police said they were investigating a report of a suspicious vehicle at the Sears Auto Center on Huffman Mill Road at about 11:55 p.m. on Sunday when they found two men using a tanker truck to siphon used motor oil from a large tank attached to the business.

The men told the officers that were working for M&M Waste Oil out of Greer, S.C., and had been contracted by Sears to pick up the oil, police said.

After checking with a manager at Sears, police said they determined that the men were actually stealing the oil.

Further investigation revealed that the men also stole oil from two other businesses on separate dates and attempted to do so at another business, police said.

Robert Charping, 50, of Greer, S.C., and Joshua Pittman, 23, of Taylors, S.C., were both charged with three counts of misdemeanor larceny and one count of attempted larceny.

They’re both probably out already since they got a $1500 bond. They’re fleeing a North Carolina lynch mob right now no doubt – run boys! You can use my hide out in Deadman’s Gultch!

M&M Waste Oil doesn’t have a website with an employee list that I’m aware of so who knows if the Charping and and Pittman really work there, but the company does have a Facebook page that a relative may frequent. Perhaps Robert Charping has a relative at the place and threw out their name to get out of trouble?

Maybe off topic but since I’m a good guy I’m just going to say that 50 is not the optimum age to start a career as an outlaw.

Used motor oil theft has been on the rise for a few years now. It began in upstate SC. There are a couple of rogue companies in the area and I have personally been trying to get these guys shut down. Oddly enough Dept of Health and Environmnetal Control (DHEC)was completely uninterested and told me it would a law enforcement issue. If they would bother to audit these companies, the required paper trail would not be in place. One of my customers in Irmo SC caught another company on video a couple of months ago and another customer, a car dealership also sent me video a couple of weeks ago. I am trying to reach the detective in Burlington to get a description of the truck used in last weeks theft.
