John Wesley Speer of Marietta Admits to Child Rape
On the eve of Thanksgiving comes news for which we can all give thanks. John Wesley Speer, an admitted child rapist, is behind bars.
Speer turned himself in at Greenville County Law Enforcement Center and now faces five counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor.
71-year-old Speer told Greenville County deputies he sexually abused five children between 1982 and 1997. The victims were members of his family, some of whom accompanied him when he turned himself in.
Matt Armstrong, of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said it was unusual for someone to come to the sheriff’s office front desk, along with some of their alleged victims, and confess to a crime.
“It is a very rare incident that someone would take it upon their free will, basically to come in and talk to law enforcement about this matter,” he said.
Fox Carolina reports:
According to arrest warrants, Speer forced three girls and two boys to perform oral sex on him. The warrants also accuse Speer of performing oral sex on the children, some as young as four years old. Speer is also accused of forcing the children to have intercourse with him, according to the warrants
Speer is being held on $250,000 bond.

God bless this man’s family. May they find the strength to weather the media attention this case will receive. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones. I hope they are able to avoid feeling as though they are being victimized all over again when the case goes to trial.
Awful, just awful. I wonder if the family finally got together and forced him to confess like an intervention. They probably refused to sit through one more Thanksgiving of lies and deceit. Good on them standing up and refusing to continue being victims of this child rapist.
Please don’t let there be more victims. Five is five too many.
If only he turned himself in earlier so he could rot in jail for even more y ears. At 71 yo he might not even live that long in jail so he will meet his maker’s judgement before long.
what about the little boys at the “ridge” over 40 years ago, is he going to admit that?????????????? ask him about that sheriff’s department. the ridge is in mcintosh county ga
i know this family personally and they are a good christian family. john speer drove the church van when i was a kid going to church in cleveland and i was flabergasted when i seen this on the news. i am the same age as his children and my heart hurts for them knowing they lived with tht horrible thing for so many years. the family is in my thoughts and prayers and they need to be encouraged and lifted up and reassured tht it was in no way shape or form their fault!
