Manhole Cover Thefts Continue to Plague Greenville

The problem here isn’t just the thieves. After all, no one is stealing manhole covers and storm grates for kicks. Scrap yards buy them and the spike in metal prices combined with a “I don’t want to know where it came from” attitude at salvage yards makes these thefts some of the quickest and easiest money thieves can make.

From WSPA:

The City of Greenville reports the theft of storm grates and manhole covers continues on streets and sidewalks. Most have been stolen from the area off East North Street.

Each manhole cover or storm gate can cost between $150 and $200 to replace.

Greenville Police ask you to call if you see any suspicious activity around those areas. The city says any legitimate work on the covers and gates are done by City or County workers in clearly marked vehicles.

You can report any suspicious activity by calling (864) 271-5333. To report a missing storm grate or manhole cover, residents are asked to call Greenville Cares, the City’s customer service call center, at 232-CARE (2273).
