Mauldin Was Right to Revoke Hailee’s Business License (with Pictures!)

When I covered the shooting in Hailee’s parking lot back in April I took the opprotunity to give out some safety advice to all you bar hoppers. It boiled down to this – bars that close at 5:00am are sleezy dives and drunk people are not rational so you need to stay out of said bars if you’re not ready to defend yourself. That created quite a to-do on in the comments where people claimed my characterization of Hailee’s and all the bar patrons and workers of the world were wrong and I had no idea what I was talking about. Also I was a liberal douchebag and a Conservative fascist who couldn’t handle my liquor and never had a drink in my life. It was a rollicking discussion to be sure.

But I was told that Haille’s wasn’t at all sleazy place where people went to have sex with skanks:

I was assured that Hailee’s was a classy, family friendly place and only prudes would object to what was going on there:

And people were very outraged when I carelessly threw around the word stripper to describe some of the people who may frequent bars that stay open to until 5:00am:

These are all photos Hailee’s put up on their promotional Facebook page – because this is the tame stuff.

Before any emails or comments come in let me set the record straight by saying I much prefer skanks and strippers to the rest of the people who hang around bars. At least their honest about who they are and I support their right to do as they please as long as they’re not involved in breaking the law.

Hailee’s was involved in breaking the law however. Just recently their manager – who is a 23-year-old girl – was arrested for breaking the new alcohol ordinance. She apparently told cops that the new law didn’t apply to the mighty Hailee’s, which is why you should probably hire people with a bit more life experience to be the manager of your bar:

Early this morning, the Mauldin Police Department arrested two employees at Hailee’s Sports Bar and Grill and charged them with violating the city’s alcohol ordinance. The ordinance states that no alcohol can be served after 2 a.m.

One of the employees was the establishment’s manager, Elizabeth Fultz, 23, who also had been cited on Sunday morning. On Tuesday morning at about 3 a.m., Fultz and another employee, Miles Nork, 25, were arrested and remanded to the Greenville County Detention Center.

Last week, Hailee’s injunction against the ordinance was denied in Circuit Court. According to Police Chief Bryan Turner his department contacted establishments in the city that would be affected by the new law now that it was about to be enforced. Hailee’s was among those contacted.

On Sunday morning, the aforementioned manager and a patron were cited for violating the ordinance.

Turner said that employees of Hailee’s denied that the ordinance applied to them when officers informed them of violations.

“In my opinion, these incidents show that the management of Hailee’s has no interest in cooperating with the enforcement of the ordinance,” Turner said.

Indeed. But how much cooperation do you expect from people who work in a bar whose business model relies on staying open until five in the morning? Hailee’s had their business license revoked a few days ago and frankly Mauldin was right to do so. And before you defend Hailee’s here is a comment someone who claimed to work at the bar left on my controversial post:

Wow. So coming across this was a pure accident and I wish for the life of me that I hadn’t. I used to work at Hailee’s and I’ll be the first to tell you that it is…by no means…one of the nicer bars in Greenville. And while its true that strippers and drug dealers and Just shady folks in general do patron the place, there are a few people who frequent there that many consider to be a benefit to society. I too know the individuals that were the victims of this crime. One really was just an innocent bystander and was not involved in the “bar fight” in any way shape or form. He currently has four…yes FOUR…holes in his leg. The bar fight was a drug deal gone wrong from another bar. The other two shooting victims don’t conduct their business at Hailee’s and were just trying to hang out and enjoy themselves. The man who committed the crime was actually called a cab but he refused to take it. And by the way, drunk people do suck. They make a complete fool of themselves, make horrendous messes that I have to then clean up, and on occasion do drive home drunk and even kill people. A friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver almost a month ago. So yeah drunk people, or should I say the results of their actions, suck. Go out with friends, have a good time, have a couple of drinks…But please please use self control and think about how your actions may affect an innocent person.

What a great place. It’s truly sad I won”t be able to go there and sit down for a drink with a drug dealer while tucking tips into the cleavage of a non-stripper.

The funny thing is, employers are starting to search the web for potential employees and there activities, and these kind of pictures pull up. “sorry we’re going to pass on your application due to the fact that you’re a whore and sure to be an HR nightmare”

I really wish I hadn’t found this, but unfortunately, I did. Yes, I got cited twice after the new alcohol ordinance went into effect. I also sat in jail for 12 hours because an employee of mine was drinking a beer in the bar after we were closed. However, I never told the cops that the new ordinance did not apply to Hailee’s. I’ll own up to what happened. I’ll even correct your errors….I was charged on early Saturday morning (September 24), not Sunday morning, and no patron was cited. Miles and I were also cited early Tuesday morning (September 27). And also, in response to Rachel, who commented about her “friend” that got shot….he does not have 4 bullet holes in his leg, he has 1. I would also like to point out that the pictures you posted on here are from Halloween, not just a random Tuesday night. What I have the biggest problem with are your comments regarding the fact that I am a bar manager who is a woman, and only 23 years old. Just because someone is a woman and they are young does not mean that they are incapable of doing a job. I didn’t apply for my job, I earned it, and I wasn’t horrible at doing what I did. The way your blog is written makes it sound like I’m a 13 year old with no sense, who couldn’t possibly know anything about running a bar. I’m obviously young, and still have a great deal of life experience ahead of me, however, that doesn’t mean I can’t perform well at my job. Were there fights and problems at Hailee’s? Absolutely. Are there fights and problems at every bar? Absolutely. With the amount of people we had coming in and out of that bar, there were bound to be problems, and we handled them the best we could. I can guarantee you, if you worked my job (which by the way, I worked between 70 and 80 hours a week), you wouldn’t last one night. Unlike some people my age (and older), who are out DRINKING at bars every night, I was running the bar.

All my “mistakes” come from the news reports which in turn come from the public arrest records. If you want to claim the cops are lying fine – but I don’t buy it.

Also in terms of your maturity – thinking that their are fights and “problems” (as in drug dealing and shootings) at every bar proves you’re at best inexperienced. You think this happens at the bar at Harry and Davids? The Four Seasons? Hell, Applebees serves booze and this doesn’t happen. Hailees was the problem.

Looks like my kinda place! There need to be more bars like Hailee’s that are open til five AM and are packed with horny, shameless bimbos! :-)
