    Awesome piece, Rob.

For some reason, RS won’t let me comment there. However, one point that maybe needs to be added to what you’re saying in comments is children wouldn’t be better off with daddy in the picture if the child was conceived in rape. I get the idea that some of the more extreme conservatives are even against birth control, and certainly against “the morning after pill”. Yet what do they expect to happen when a single young woman is raped, whether it be someone they know or not? Should she marry her rapist? Should she go out the second she finds out she’s pregnant and find a man willing to marry a woman who is pregnant and, in all likelihood, extremely traumatized (which is just inviting more trouble for the child to be born… we know that some pedophiles target single mothers.) If they can’t prevent that pregnancy, how are they supposed to deal with that situation?

If it ever happened to me, I wouldn’t be able to abort any child. But if anyone were to tell me that I had to keep that child’s sperm donor in his/her life, I think I might bitchslap them.

Also, what about widows? I’ve already told my husband that, Gods forbid, if anything ever happened to him, I wouldn’t remarry. I would find it difficult to trust the motives of any potential suitors.

Yeah. I agree we need to realize that there are plenty of reasons that a father or mother shouldn’t be in the picture, but that doesn’ make the child less a blessing.

Do you have an RS account? Or maybe you used salty language. They don’t did that there.

I thought I had commented on one of your other pieces there, but when I clicked the “respond” button, nothing happened. It’s weird. Might be something wrong with my computer or browsers, but I couldn’t get screenshots of Trench’s blog yesterday, either, even though it still worked on mine and others. Very strange.

Great piece. It made me feel guilty all those times I’ve changed the channel whenever child abuse/murder stories are shown or whenever I read about it online..
This might seem like a silly question, but do abused children grow up to be abusers ? What makes someone want to mess with children, is it because children can’t fight back ?
I’m a simple man and not a rocket scientist, so I’m completely confused about why people do bad shit to their kids, cannot comprehend it one bit. It makes me scared and nervous to be around children, totally changes my behavior around them and I treat them more like adults then kids.
I think being over-protective is a good thing these days.

Most abused children do not grow up to abuse kids. In terms of sexual abuse this chart helps break down the type of people who target children:

In many cases it is simply as you say, because they can’t fight back.

Thanks for the link, it’s not nice reading about something like that.
