New Newsreal Post Up – Social Cons Unhappy

I wrote a post criticizing supposed conservative Stacy McCain and his recent series of pieces which claim women who are date raped have it coming. The comments are full of social cons defending this depravity. I’m disgusted:

Read it here.

Hold on. As near as I can tell, you and I don’t actually disagree about date rape or sexual assault. The only thing we disagree on is what McCain intended to say. That’s a far cry from “defending depravity.” (I encourage readers to check out the comments section at NRB to see why I disagree for themselves, and determine whether or not anything I’ve said is “disgusting.”)

Actually we do disagree, because in those comments you said this –

“Rape apologia”? Sorry, but I’ve re-read the original offending post a couple times now, and I just can’t see it. Example the line “in what sense are you a victim of anything except your own stupidity” pretty clearly seems to be referring to people who have *already chosen* to have sex with someone or *are* having sex with someone – not simply anyone who rape apologists would say “invites” unwanted contact via skimpy clothes, flirting, etc.

His observation that AFTER people have gotten that far into it, they’d be crazy to expect each other to “negotiate consent calmly on an act-by-act basis” is a far, far cry from pro-rape.”

Which literally means that you think if someone agrees to give me a handjob and I end up anally raping them you think they had it coming, they brought it on themselves. I think otherwise.

I see rape as the responsibility of the rapist, and crime in general as motivated by internal criminality. You see the victims as initiating or at least motivating the crime. That’s the difference.

This is, quite simply, an irrational characterization of my words that relies on nothing but YOUR speculation. It’s even less well-founded than your speculation about Stacy’s intentions.

Let’s be clear: My position is that once you withdraw consent – once you either verbally say no or physically try to stop – whatever the other person does should be criminal. Throw the book at him.

    But y’know what? That’s also Stacy’s position:

“Julian Assange is an exploitative scumbag, for whom I have zero sympathy.”

(Responding to “If they tell you to stop, and you don’t, from THAT POINT FORWARD you are raping them”) – “With which I have no disagreement, given the circumstances…I am not endorsing, advocating or defending Julian Assange’s behavior. He is a bad person, what he did was clearly wrong, and whatever harm befalls him, he most certainly deserves.”

That ISN’T what McCain says and it’s not what you say when you wrote:

Example the line “in what sense are you a victim of anything except your own stupidity” pretty clearly seems to be referring to people who have *already chosen* to have sex with someone or *are* having sex with someone – not simply anyone who rape apologists would say “invites” unwanted contact via skimpy clothes, flirting, etc.

You’re words Calvin. People are crazy to expect “negotiation” (by which we mean what? Your partner responding to you when you say “not in the ass” I take it) which IS supporting date rape, or at least providing cover for it.

No one is crazy to expect that before, say, fisting someone you ask. I think it’s just polite to ask a lady if it’s acceptable before putting my penis in one of her orifices but as you and Knepper say I must be a freak.

You know you’re not allowed near any of my female friends or relatives now, right?

“You know you’re not allowed near any of my female friends or relatives now, right?”

Do they know that you choose to misconstrue things people say in absurdly-demagogic ways?

  6. Rob Taylor on December 9th, 2010 2:05 pm

No, they just know I take security seriously and don’t want them getting raped. Or being lectured by a douche when they do get raped on how they brought it on themselves.

I’d have to say I agree with you on this one, Rob. Rape (date or otherwise) is NEVER the victim’s fault.

  8. Rob Taylor on December 9th, 2010 6:13 pm

Even stoners more pretentious than you can see you’re wrong Calvin. Sad.

Not as sad as someone being banned and still running back but sad enough.

  9. Ajax the Great on December 9th, 2010 7:56 pm

Hey, that’s Mr. Stoner to you, buddy. And no, I don’t really fit the definition of “stoner”, as I barely even do the stuff anymore.

  10. Rob Taylor on December 9th, 2010 8:08 pm

Right. That’s why you can’t hear someone criticize drug use sans crying.

  11. Ajax the Great on December 9th, 2010 8:35 pm

Crying? I have no problem hearing criticism of drug use, as long as it is reasonably accurate. What I DON’T like is intellectual dishonesty or biased junk science–there’s a difference.

But wait–I thought the topic of this conversation was rape, not drugs.
