NYPD Forming Special Social Media Unit

Which makes sense given the new trend of morons bragging about their crimes on Facebook. But the real concern here is cracking down on flash mobs before they do too much damage, which is laudable but frankly impossible as the London riots proved.

From the Daily News:

The NYPD has formed a new unit to track troublemakers who announce plans or brag about their crimes on Twitter, MySpace and Facebook.

Newly named Assistant Commissioner Kevin O’Connor, one of the department’s online and gang gurus, has been put in charge of the new juvenile justice unit. He and his staff will mine social media, looking for info about troublesome house parties, gang showdowns and other potential mayhem, sources said.

The power of social media to empower both criminals and cops has been on full display in London this week, where riots and looting have been spreading dramatically.

The rioters have been using Twitter and BlackBerry messages to choose targets for looting or burning – and to alert one another about police positions.

The very same social media have been a source for those trying to help cops by posting photos of rioters.

O’Connor’s new unit will operate under the Community Affairs Bureau; it will also handle outreach programs, with its mandate going beyond the Net.

Still, the 23-year veteran is known for his success in online policing, including stings to catch predator pervs looking for sex with underage victims.

Sounds like a great idea until you realize how impossible it is. I myself how four different Twitter accounts I use to promote my various sites – kids have dozens of online hang-outs and the cops plan is basically just surfing around hoping they run into a plot? Good luck with that.

Damn this George Orwell coffee tastes like 1984.

Maybe they could work it the same way they do the pedoboards? You know, go in pretending to be a college kid and “infiltrate” the communities to get the information.

I don’t know… I’m glad they catch pedos like that, and I like watching “Bait Car” on TV, or when a female cop posses as a prostitute and they bust some old tucker trying to bust a nut for 20 bucks…… but really, where are the lines of entrapment drawn……. I can hear Rob now…. “these people were going to do something bad anyway” “they just got caught by the right people” I have also heard that the old “are you a cop” question doesn’t fly anymore… they are aloud by law to lie to you… If you even find yourself asking that question…. you are doing something wrong… LOL

Actually I think in a place like NY it’s just not going to work. By the time people know the flash mob is on half the perps will be there – and then what? The cops can’t stop hundreds of kids from doing anything.

To me this is one of those “TEOTWAWKI” scenarios. People have to learn how to defend their property from crowds. *cough* Bear spray *cough*

I hate to admit this, but the thought of hitting an angry mob with bear spray, kinda makes me smile… I wonder if there are any videos out there of testing on humans? sorry, I sound to excited about this… my bad

I could be wrong, but isn’t it only entrapment if they’re being “enticed” to commit illegal acts by the undercover? I mean, if they’re out there doing this stuff, the fact that someone is there to witness the shit they’re doing anyway doesn’t mean they wouldn’t have been doing it otherwise.

When LE has people pretend to be a minor to catch the pervs, they don’t approach the pervs for that reason (even though anyone who would pick up a kid for sex that approaches them will be out looking for a kid to approach otherwise… seriously… if you’re not the type to do that shit on your own, you’re not going to start talking smut to a kid who approaches you, you won’t send them pictures of your junk, and you certainly aren’t going to go pick them up when they sneak out their bedroom window. Just sayin’.)

But if someone goes “undercover” within a group, which then starts planning illegal shit, they’d have been doing that whether or not the undercover was there. Saying otherwise is like saying teaching a baby sign language is going to cause them to be deaf. It’s ludicrous.

LOL Rob, you are and enabler. thanks for the vid… D, I get it, I even talked myself out of the whole entrapment thing in my own post. I think that’s just the 20 something in me wanting to say F the Police. When I lived in Fla. in a small gulf coast town that catered to the blue hairs, the cops would target the youth. We were good by today’s standards, but we were still stopped, searched and harassed. I have a problem with authority hehehe
