Simpsonville Standoff Ends in Suicide

A five hour police standoff that started with a domestic dispute ended in suicide Monday afternoon.  Simpsonville Police responded to  Springleaf Court in the Autumn Trace subdivision at about 7 a.m.

Simpsonville Assistant Police Chief Colleen O’Neal said that a call came in to emergency workers about a domestic disturbance at the home. She said that the man involved in the incident left the scene before police responded. She said that responding officers spotted the man’s car and followed it back to the home.

O’Neal said that the man jumped out of the car and ran inside the home. They said he held two people inside the home for less than an hour, but he refused to come outside. They said that they believe the man was armed.

Despite the efforts of the Greenville County SWAT team, Simpsonville Fire Department, and negotiators, the man was found dead inside the home at about noon.  He appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, police said.

The official cause of death is pending, and the man’s name and address have yet to be released.
