Sunset Park Beating of Teen Girl a Hoax, Police Say

16-year-old Pearl Brown has a lot of ‘splainin’ to do.

Mauldin Police say Brown faked the attack that supposedly left her unconscious in Sunset Park on New Year’s Day. They also say she pretended to be the attacker when calling 911, and later gave a vivid suspect description to police.

Police said Brown admitted making the 911 call while pretending to be a man saying he “just killed a girl.”  She said, with her voice lowered, “She wouldn’t let me touch her. I just thought she was pretty.”

Paramedics took Brown to the hospital. She was released on Saturday.

No charges have been brought against Brown for filing the false report.  Mauldin Police Chief Bryan Turner told WYFF4 he was unsure if charges would be filed.

Mauldin Police clearly believed Brown’s story enough to release a forensic sketch of the supposed attacker to the general public.  And that may be where Pearl Brown’s fantasy did the most damage: let’s hope the forensic sketch  doesn’t actually resemble a man who frequents Sunset Park.

Readers, what do you think? Should Pearl Brown be treated leniently due to her age, or should charges be filed to send a strong message to all teens that this sort of behavior is deplorable? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Charges should absolutely be filed. It is for a court to decide whether she deserves leniency, not the police. Kids don’t consider the impact of “silly” dares on others. A message needs to go out that this is unacceptable and could destroy lives.
