Surprise! Homeless Shelters Increase Crime!

Because they consolidate drug users into one area, usually a suburban one. Despite what bleeding hearts tell you most homeless people are addicts, drunks or mentally ill. Thus living with large populations of them is always, shall we say, challenging. Not South Carolina related but the problems these Florida residents are having is similar to the problem Greenville has – especially the downtown area.

Before I met my husband, I lived in an area that had several halfway houses and shelters. The crime was pretty bad then, but I’ve since found out that I moved just in time. It’s gotten much worse, in spite of the city trying to “gentrify” the downtown area.

I pass the soup kitchen in Gvl every day and wonder how these people got there and where are they going with their belongings on their back. I also wonder if they live by a code where they don’t steal from each other, or the women I see walking around with them…. is there abuse or prostitution? it would be an interesting book idea to interview these people and relate their stories….. that is, if they didn’t beat me up and steal my sh!t.
