Suspect Charged in Shooting Death of Al-Waajid Samad Haneef (Plus, Killer’s MySpace)
A suspect with an extensive criminal history has been charged with murder following Monday’s shooting death of 38-year-old store owner Al-Waajid Samad Haneef.
Chavis Cox, 20, is being held into the Greenville County Detention Center awaiting Tuesday’s expected bond hearing. He is charged with murder and posession [sic] of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
Investigators told News Channel 7, he has a long criminal history which includes probation violations and burglary.
The suspect’s MySpace profile is adorned with gang symbols and references to Gangster Disciples and the Folk Nation, an alliance of gangs that originated in Chicago and have spread into the South and Midwest.
His profile includes dozens of photos in which he wears a black or gray bandana on his head or over his face. In many pictures he is flashing gang signs.
On his MySpace profile, Cox refers to himself as a “proud parent.”
As reported yesterday, Greenville County Sheriff’s deputies were first called to the scene at Haneef’s Auto Sales in Greenville after a shot was fired shortly before 5 p.m. Monday.
A heroic local security guard named Garrett Johnson tackled the suspect, Chavis Cox of Greer, as he got into a Jeep Cherokee to flee the scene. Johnson called 911 and detained Cox until authorities arrived on the scene. His quick, brave, and decisive actions kept a dangerous and degenerate criminal from returning to the streets. He told News Channel 7:
I wouldn’t label myself as a hero. I would just say God had a specific time for me to be at that specific place.
A gun was recovered from the suspect’s vehicle.
The victim, Mr. Haneef, was taken from the auto parts store, located at 2 Randolph St. near the intersection of White Horse Road and Augusta Road, to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 6:30 p.m. Haneef was also known by the nickname “Six.”
