Victimless Crime File: Mexican Cartel Pirates Terrorizing Texas Lake

Victimless Crime Files is a series I used to do on my blog Red Alerts designed to show the fallacy of the idea that legalizing drugs would stop crime. At best legalization leads to lower arrest rates but drug fuelled crime would no more disappear than alcohol fueled crimes did when prohibition was repealed.

Mexican drug cartels are often used as a reason to legalize, the theory being that once stoners could buy their weed in stores cartel leaders would shrug their shoulders and get jobs at a landscaping company. The Mafia didn’t disappear after prohibition and cartels will not disappear if pot was legal. One reason is because the cartels make the majority of their money with meth and cocaine which no rational person wants to make legal, but the main reason is because drugs are not their only way to make money. Kidnappings, sexual slavery, robbery and now piracy are all ways various cartel factions fund themselves.

That’s right, I said piracy:

Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but if legalization cuts into their profits won’t there be an increase in violent crime like this as their revenue is cut off?

Sorry Libertarians, if you want to smoke pot just say so but don’t yank our chains on how legalizing pot will defang the drug gangs.

I guess it would be funny if people weren’t being terrorized.

But seriously, if you legalize cannabis, about 60% of the cartels’ income would evaporate. No business that loses that much can stay powerful for long. All the other drug and criminal activity markets are currently saturated, and they would have nowhere to go, and would have a tough time affording AK-47s, RPGs, and other such tools of war. The Mexican government can easily defeat them if that happens, but until then it is an uphill battle.

Bullshit. The Cartels run slaves, meth, heroin, and guns. Legalize pot and the cartels will just demand the legal sellers pay the same taxes street dealers did. Those that went tot he ops would die and the cartels would still have plenty of money.

If you controlled roughly 1/3rd of a country would you just give up when one source of income changed?

Whatever. I’m off my soapbox for now. Peace.
